Maine Coon Cat

You are here: Breeds and Registration > Cat Breeds > Maine Coon Cat

This cat could best be described as a semi-longhair for his coat is not as long as the Longhairs' but is not as short as the Short hairs'. The coon cat comes in many colors and in most of the traditional cat markings. The color of the eyes varies with the color of the coat.

The Maine Coon cat is not the result of the crossing of a cat with a coon as the name would lead you to believe, but has developed from the inter-breeding of the many cats brought back by Maine sailors from foreign lands around the 1830's.

He is particularly popular in the state of Maine even today and exhibited in cat shows there. A big cat, he can weigh 16 or more pounds when grown. His owners claim the coon cat to have a great personality and much charm.
